Our History
2004Everything started from a box of crayons and a dream of filling up an empty classroom.
The realization struck during an outreach program in Bukidnon where there are classrooms that have no learning tools except the bare chalkboard made from scratch. The children here have no equal access to the interactive learning tools that a decent classroom should have. It sparked a dream of filling up all public school classrooms in the Philippines with learning tools that will help unlock the world of discovery for Filipino children and to train, assist and empower teachers to teach in an enjoyable, dynamic, and productive manner through fun and engaging activities.
2011After years of material-making, dreams started to unfold.
Keeping the dream in heart, Teacher Tisha Cruz, the Alpabasa founder started making learning materials for English reading. With the help of friends, they were able to donate these to different schools. But after gathering feedback fcrom the teachers they’ve helped, she realized something was missing. She realized that it would be more effective if they were taught first in Filipino.
Thus in 2011, Alpabasa was born. The first Alpabasa material was a 31-page book that transformed into Filipino flashcards focusing on syllabication. With the support of Sa Aklat Sisikat, the Alpabasa materials helped 100 public school teachers.
2012-2014Alpabasa became a program and initial sets were created
From individual Filipino materials, the Alpabasa Program was systematized and formed into sets. The learning program was carefully crafted by teachers and mothers. The initial sets were donated to 200 classrooms in Quezon City.2015Alpabasa becomes a complete Filipino Reading Program.
A pilot summer reading program was initiated with 22 teachers from Quezon City and Las Piñas to test the complete 8-step sets of the Alpabasa Program. The success of this pilot test even won a million peso grant from Pharmaton Life Changers Challenged.2016Alpabasa and DepEd SDO of San Fernando, Pampanga
With the help of the officials of DepEd SDO-City of San Fernando, Pampanga, the Alpabasa Program was introduced through the training of 180 teachers wherein 80 complete teacher sets were donated.2017-2019Alpabasa Program goes to different places
With the help of different individuals, we were able to raise enough funds to train 30 teachers in Muntinlupa. These teachers also received 24 complete sets.
We were also fortunate to fly to Iloilo and introduce to 8 teachers the Alpabasa through training and the donation of 8 complete sets. Soon, 12 teachers of Zambales were also trained and were given 1 complete set. More or less 500 Kindergarten and Grade 1 in Tarlac teachers were also given the same training. We also trained 8 teachers from Zamboanga West Elementary school and gave them the complete sets.
2020-2021Alpabasa program shifted from classrooms to screens
When COVID-19 happened, schools were closed and classes were done online and modular. But, we believe that learning should not stop within the walls of the classrooms. Distance learning was implemented, and the opportunity of motivating children to learn even at home became part of our vision. Home is where child’s learning first takes place, where they can learn comfortably, and be happy. Home is where Alpabasa can be needed the most. Through the help of different individuals, the Alpabasa learning experience continued to different public schools in Quezon City, San Fernando, Pampanga, Muntinlupa City, Manila City, Pasig City, and more.2022The Read to Achieve Foundation Philippines Inc. was born.
The RAFPI officially started in July 2021. We have then started collecting funds for the public schools to have access to the Alpabasa Reading program. The mission already started before and now, we are stepping up our goal from helping classrooms to building a nation of Filipino readers - one school at a time!
